Blackout Solutions

I've said it many times before, but a dark room is critical to the perfect sleep environment. Keeping a child’s room dark, especially when it's still light outside when they go to bed and/or for nap times can be challenging. I've got a new product to share with you today that can help keep a child’s room dark and help benefit their sleep.

A child room should be dark when sleeping because darkness helps our bodies to produce melatonin, which aids in our sleep. Even the smallest bit of light can sometimes lead to early waking ups, nighttime wakeups, or short naps. In our house, we use blackout blinds and blackout curtains to prevent any light from entering the room. We even cover up lights on monitors, sound machines, and fans with something super fancy like duct tape or painter’s tape.

Total darkness also helps to prevent a baby or younger child from being distracted or stimulated by items in their sleep environment. As a bonus, having a child who is accustomed to sleeping in a completely dark room can be helpful when traveling. They will be less likely to be confused by new surroundings – just be sure to bring along any items that they are accustomed to (sleep sack, sound machine, lovey, etc.).

I recently stumbled across a new product called the Sleepout Curtain. This blind is specifically designed to prevent light from entering a room. It's easy to install, folds up small for travel, and can be taken down or moved without any trouble.

Here is a video of me installing the Sleepout Curtain in a bedroom - this is the first time I opened the package and attempted to install the blind.  You can see how easy it is and how well it works.
